Chapped Lips? Keep Kissable This Winter
There is nothing worse than sore and flaky chapped lips in the winter. The cold wind, air conditioning and colds and bugs going around all contribute to drying out your skin and eventually your lips get flaky, chapped and sore. It can make you feel self-conscious, especially when talking, and lipstick just doesn't look the same without a smooth lip for it to be applied to. It is important to try to prevent chapped lips occurring and also make sure your treat your chapped lips with care.
Why Do We Get Chapped Lips?
Lips get chapped when they are exposed to cold air and dry out when the moisture is lost from the skin. As the moisture leaves, the skin that is left behind becomes tight and then starts to split and crack, causing the flaky feeling and sometimes becoming very sore and can even bleed if not cared for.
How To Care For Chapped Lips
Do not pull at the loose skin as it can rip, cause bleeding and possibly get infected or take longer to heal properly. Also avoid licking your lips (which is the most tempting thing to do) as the saliva does not help to moisturise the lips but actually dries them out further.
Think a little holistically - drink plenty of water, eat well and make sure you are not too run down. Take care of your whole body as well as treating the chapped lips.
As soon as you feel your lips start to tighten then that is the time to dig out the lip balm, or if the current tube is looking old and tired then purchase a fresh new one. If you are at home then you can apply intensive lip butter and allow that to be absorbed into the chapped lips to really give the skin a boost of hydration. Something like our Aromatherapy Associates Hydrating Lip Balm works wonders especially overnight.
When you are out and about it is easy to forget about lip care but don't ignore that flaky feeling. Carry a lip balm with you in your handbag, coat pocket or even in your car, so that there is one to hand where ever you are to top up the hydration. We have a wonderful little In Transit Turbo Balm from This Works which is perfectly portable and just right for replenishing dry skin not only on chapped lips but also elbows, heels or anywhere that needs some extra nourishment.
Top Tip: Store the lip balm in a pocket either inside or on the outside of your handbag for easy access. Saves you having to rummage around the bottom for 10 mins or empty the entire contents of your handbag on the pavement.
Prevention Is Better Than Cure
It is better to take care of your skin on a regular basis throughout the colder months and lips can often be forgotten in the daily rush. Try to use a lip balm as part of your daily regime and keep applying after showers or exercise or before you venture out into the winter weather.
The best thing you can do to avoid chapped lips is to use a balm that helps to create a barrier and restore natural oils and greases to the skin to keep it subtle and smooth. There are many different lip balms and moisturisers around and they come in different flavours and formulas from butters to tubes and sticks. Some of the thicker balms are more intensive and perfect for deep hydration and some balms are brilliant for instantly soothing and come in a handy tube which makes them great for carrying around.
Your lips go through a lot during the day, so it is good to treat them with the same care and attention that you do with your facial skin. Ren Vita mineral lip balm not only protects and hydrates but replenishes your lips with a nourishing blend of vitamin E and oils. Vitamin E is in many skin care products and the reason for this is that it works as a nutrient and antioxidant and helps to protect the cells from deterioration and keep them healthy.
One way you can incorporate lip care into your daily regime with ease is to use a multi-purpose moisturiser like Organic Pharmacy Lip and Eye cream which is brilliant for reducing the appearance of dark circles under the eyes, reducing eye puffiness and keeping your lips hydrated and nourished. This powerful little cream works wonders and can help you remember your lip care, because we all want the perfect pout!
